Crafting Art from Found Materials
Outdoor furniture is way too expensive!
The Vision
It all started with some sunny weather, we decided is would be nice to sit outside in the garden for meals. My partner and I were on a mission to find outdoor table and chairs in Auckland. After visiting countless stores, we were both frustrated by how expensive, ugly, and poorly made the options were. Nothing seemed like it would last more than a season. That's when I had a lightbulb moment. I turned to her and said, "Why don't we just make our own?" After some convincing, she agreed, and we bought a beautiful timber slab. I decided to handle the legs myself. You can see the finished product in the first picture.
The Design Process
The design process was a journey in itself. I began by sketching out ideas, combining the raw aesthetic of the steel with the warm tones of the timber. Each element was meticulously planned to ensure a balance between durability and visual appeal. The table was to be both a functional piece and a work of art.
Welding and Crafting
With the design finalized, the crafting process began. Welding the steel frame was a critical step, requiring precision and skill to ensure stability and strength. Each weld was carefully executed, forming the sturdy foundation for the table. The timber slabs were then cut and treated, bringing out their natural beauty and ensuring longevity.
Final Assembly
The final assembly was a moment of triumph. Seeing the pieces come together as envisioned was incredibly satisfying. The steel frame and timber slabs complemented each other perfectly, creating a harmonious blend of industrial and natural elements. The table was not just a piece of furniture but a testament to the beauty of combining different materials.
The Finished Piece
The finished table is a centerpiece that draws attention and admiration. It embodies the essence of custom design, where every detail is considered, and every element tells a story. This table is more than just a functional object; it is a symbol of creativity, resourcefulness, and the art of making something beautiful out of the found and forgotten.
